Lesson Set 1 - Teaching the Serial Comma
1. I love the way he led his students through the invitation to revise by help them visualize what they were describing. I think that is a great way to help students choose the right words to convey specific descriptions.
2. I never thought of uncombining sentences then letting the students recombine them. I love that idea.
Lesson Set 2 - Here It Comes: Teaching Colons
The graphic on page 67 is a great tool to use for my struggling learners or even visual learners who need to see the sentences side by side. I will implement this graphic and use it to create similar ones of my own.
Lesson Set 3 - Capitalize on This: Teaching Capitalization
Using a nonfiction book or novel to find capital letters and then discover why they are capitalized is something I have never done. Why have I never done that?! This was a big A-ha moment for me!
Lesson Set 4 - Possession or Contraction - You Be the Judge: Teaching Apostrophes
Apostrophes are grey territory to my students. Some of them just barely make a pencil mark so that it could be taken as an apostrophe if needed, but a simple slip of the pencil if not. They are not confident in using them correctly. Much like in Lesson Set 3, I realized the value of showing the students how apostrophes work rather than simply telling them or going through a few sentences on the board that need correcting. Also, the graphic on page 83 is helpful to help students see the differences. I hope to implement this kind of progression to help students grasp the correct usage and why it is correct.

I loved the uncombining of sentences, too. I plan to implement that skill this next year.
ReplyDeleteHe uses this practice for many of the Lesson Sets and I love the critical thinking process involved in doing this.
